Principal Investigator: William Self, Ph.D.

Department: Molecular Biology & Microbiology

Source: National Institutes of Health (NIH)/National Institute on Aging (NIA)

Project Title: Catalytic Properties of Nanoceria

Total Project Funding: $1,047,960 (4 years)

Description: Elucidating the biophysical properties of vacancy-engineered nanoparticles.

Quote: We are studying cerium-oxide nanoparticles and have shown that these nanoparticles exhibit superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. We have found that this SOD activity may produce potent antioxidant action in cell culture and animal models. We are testing the hypothesis that this SOD activity is the mechanism behind the antioxidant action.
